Meet Carlos Kumah. He’s an energetic young man, living in Wli (pronounced Vli) — an African farming village of roughly 2,000 people in the eastern Volta region of Ghana.
Wli is also a tourist destination, famous for its 1600-foot waterfalls—the tallest in West Africa.
The story of Plastic is Gone! began when Karen Shenfeld, a Canadian poet in her sixties, travelled to Wli in January of 2025 and hired Carlos as her guide. Carlos.accompanied her to the falls. He also invited her home to meet his mother and share a traditional meal.
Karen enjoyed visiting Wli. But she was saddened by the tremendous amount of plastic and other litter scattered everywhere around the village—in the market, on pathways between houses, in rainwater ditches alongside every road.
Carlos and Karen decided to do something. Together they founded Plastic Is Gone! Carlos immediately began working with youth to pick up the litter around the village and collect it in a single appointed place.
Carlos Kumah accepts donations in person in Ghanaian Cedis.
